Apple Expands iPhone Satellite Connectivity with Starlink and T-Mobile

Apple first introduced satellite connectivity to iPhone with iPhone 14 back in 2022, enabling users to reach emergency services when traveling outside cellular coverage areas. Now with iOS 18‘s enhancements, users are also able to send messages through satellite.

Apple’s Partnership with SpaceX and T-Mobile

Apple originally partnered with Globalstar for satellite connectivity; however, according to Bloomberg reports, they have recently begun working with SpaceX and T-Mobile in order to integrate Starlink satellite services onto iPhones.

T-Mobile and SpaceX first announced their collaboration in 2022, initially specifying that only Samsung devices would support Starlink connectivity. Since then, T-Mobile has begun testing Starlink connectivity on limited iPhone models – coinciding with iOS 18.3, though Apple has not explicitly mentioned it as part of its update notes.

T-Mobile has invited select users to join the Starlink beta, stating:

“You’re in the T-Mobile Starlink beta. You can now stay connected with texting via satellite from virtually anywhere. To start experiencing coverage beyond, please update to iOS 18.3.”

Additionally, T-Mobile updated its support website, confirming that iPhones now support Starlink satellite services. Currently, this feature only enables text messaging, but plans are in place to expand functionality.

T-Mobile iPhone users in areas without cell coverage can use SpaceX’s Starlink satellites to attempt connecting. Users can enable texting through either Globalstar or Starlink services for emergency communication via the satellite menu.

Starlink connectivity differs from Globalstar in that it works automatically when in a pocket or purse, eliminating any manual alignment requirements for connecting.

T-Mobile Starlink currently only supports text messaging; however, both companies have announced plans to expand this connectivity with support for data and voice calls. At present, T-Mobile’s Starlink program is only available within the US, whereas Apple Globalstar can be found worldwide; however, SpaceX is actively working to expand Starlink services worldwide.

T-Mobile recently announced its plan to implement Starlink connectivity for all customers by 2025. In the interim, interested users may join T-Mobile’s beta program by signing up on its official website.

Apple has made significant advancements in satellite connectivity, giving iPhone users improved communication abilities even in remote locations. Starlink support expansion marks an important step towards creating a future where smartphones remain connected regardless of user travels.
