iPhone Users Can Experience Starlink Satellite Connectivity for Free

T-Mobile has announced the public beta launch of its Starlink satellite feature, bringing off-the-grid connectivity to compatible iPhone and Android devices across the U.S. This means users from any carrier, including AT&T and Verizon, can sign up to test the feature. Starlink, a subsidiary of Elon Musk’s SpaceX, powers the satellite connectivity.

Who Can Join the Beta Program?

The Starlink beta program is now open for sign-ups, offering free satellite connectivity until July for approved beta testers. However, spots are limited, so early registration is encouraged.

Post-Beta Pricing

  • T-Mobile Go 5G Next plan & eligible plans: Free access.
  • Other T-Mobile plans: $15 per month, per line.
  • Non-T-Mobile customers (AT&T, Verizon, etc.): $20 per month, per line.
  • Limited-time offer: Customers who sign up before February 29 will get a discounted rate of $10 per month starting in July.

When cellular service is unavailable, a compatible iPhone or Android smartphone enrolled in the T-Mobile Starlink beta will automatically connect to Starlink satellites in space. This allows users to send and receive iMessages and SMS messages without cellular or Wi-Fi coverage.

Upcoming Features

T-Mobile has confirmed that voice calls and mobile data support will be added in future updates, expanding the service’s capabilities.

Apple has introduced a status bar indicator to identify when an iPhone is connected to a carrier-provided satellite feature like T-Mobile Starlink. The iPhone will display “SAT” in the status bar when using satellite connectivity.

To disable satellite connectivity:

  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Tap Cellular.
  3. Select your carrier or phone number.
  4. Toggle off Satellite.

Compatible Devices & Requirements

To use T-Mobile Starlink, Apple states that you need:

Apple already provides free satellite connectivity on all iPhone 14 models and newer, thanks to its partnership with Globalstar. iPhones can use both Apple’s satellite services and carrier-provided features like T-Mobile Starlink.

Apple’s Satellite Features:

  • Emergency SOS via satellite (initially launched with iPhone 14).
  • iMessage & SMS messaging via satellite (added in iOS 18).
  • Find My location updates via satellite.
  • Roadside assistance via satellite.

These features are currently free for iPhone users in the U.S., but availability in other countries varies.

Unlike Globalstar, Starlink operates a much larger satellite constellation, ensuring seamless and automatic connectivity without requiring users to manually point their iPhone at the sky. This makes Starlink’s satellite coverage faster and more reliable in remote areas.

Final Thoughts

With T-Mobile Starlink now in public beta, users across the U.S. have a new way to stay connected even in off-grid locations. Whether you’re an adventurer, traveler, or just someone who experiences frequent signal loss, this game-changing satellite feature is set to redefine mobile connectivity. Sign up today to be among the first to experience satellite messaging without limits!
