Foldable iPhone Leaks: Apple’s 4:3 Screen Design Explained

Apple is reportedly working on a foldable iPhone with a 4:3 aspect ratio for its inner display. According to leaks from a reliable Weibo source, this design choice aims to ensure consistency with the outer screen while also aligning with the iPad’s software experience. The foldable design is expected to enhance usability, making the device more versatile for browsing, reading, and multitasking.

Display and Aspect Ratio

Apple’s iPad and iPad Pro models have consistently used a 4:3 aspect ratio, which provides a balanced viewing experience in both portrait and landscape orientations. This format is well-suited for reading, web browsing, and split-screen multitasking. The only exception is the 8.3-inch iPad Mini, which features a 3:2 aspect ratio for a slightly taller and narrower display.

Leaks suggest that the iPhone Fold will feature a 5.5-inch outer display and a 7.8-inch inner screen. The inner display is designed to be crease-free, offering a smooth and seamless experience. Industry analyst Ming-Chi Kuo supports these claims, reinforcing expectations that Apple is prioritizing display quality in its foldable design.

Build and Durability

Apple reportedly plans to use a titanium alloy body for enhanced durability and a metallic glass hinge to ensure long-term reliability. Foldable iPhone often face durability challenges, particularly around the hinge mechanism, so Apple’s choice of premium materials suggests a focus on longevity.

The device is expected to feature a dual-lens rear camera and a front-facing camera that functions in both folded and unfolded modes. This design ensures users can take high-quality selfies and make video calls in any configuration.

Touch ID Over Face ID

Unlike current iPhones, which rely on Face ID, the iPhone Fold may reintroduce Touch ID through a side-mounted fingerprint scanner. This shift likely aims to save internal space while maintaining strong security. Apple’s decision to use Touch ID over Face ID could also improve usability in various lighting conditions and provide an alternative for users who prefer fingerprint authentication.

AI-Powered Multitasking and User Experience

Apple is expected to leverage AI-driven features to enhance the foldable iPhone’s user experience. The larger screen real estate will likely support advanced multitasking, allowing users to open multiple apps simultaneously, similar to iPads. Apple may also introduce AI-enhanced workflows, optimizing how apps adapt between folded and unfolded states.

Expected Pricing and Release Date

Industry insiders estimate that the iPhone Fold will be priced between $2,000 and $2,500 in the U.S., placing it in the ultra-premium segment. Experts predict Apple will launch its first foldable sometime next year, but the exact timeline remains unclear.
