Apple Plans Major MacBook Air Display Upgrade for 2027

Apple is gearing up to launch a new MacBook Air in 2027, featuring an upgraded LCD display that uses Oxide TFT technology instead of the current amorphous silicon (a-Si) panels. This change, reported by The Elec, promises noticeable improvements in both performance and efficiency.
What Makes Oxide TFT a Big Deal?
The new display tech is a big step up from what’s currently available. Oxide TFT LCD panels consume less power while delivering sharper visuals and smoother motion. That means better image quality, more fluid scrolling, and a boost in battery life—great news for anyone who spends long hours on their MacBook Air.
One major advantage of Oxide TFT technology is its faster pixel response time. This should help reduce motion blur in videos and games while providing a more uniform brightness across the entire screen. The dreaded “clouding” effect seen on some LCD screens could also be minimized, making for a cleaner, more immersive viewing experience.
Who’s Making the New Displays?
To make this happen, Samsung Display and BOE are working on the necessary manufacturing capabilities. Samsung is upgrading its A6 production line with new deposition machines, while BOE is building out its B16 line with similar technology. Although exact production numbers haven’t been confirmed, both companies are getting ready to produce millions of these advanced panels annually.
What About the OLED MacBook Air Display?
Interestingly, this LCD upgrade comes amid delays in Apple’s plans for an OLED MacBook Air Display. Originally expected around 2027, the OLED version is now rumored to be pushed back to 2029 or later.
Meanwhile, Apple is still on track to release an OLED MacBook Pro in 2026. That model is expected to feature a thinner design and have an estimated production volume of 3 to 5 million units per year. This suggests Apple is prioritizing OLED for its higher-end laptops before bringing the technology to its more affordable MacBook Air lineup.
What This Means for MacBook Air Users
For now, MacBook Air users can look forward to a significant LCD upgrade that will improve their experience without the higher costs associated with OLED screens. The improved efficiency, better brightness consistency, and sharper visuals should make the 2027 MacBook Air one of the best versions yet.
